Concluding lesson for the first Therapeutic Hunger Workshop
Just to conclude the exercises in building habits of mindful eating and sensible choices it is important that we have respect for ourselves and other elements that provide us benefits. Hunger is one such sensation that has very positive effect on our health. In order to understand and respect hunger, it is important to differentiate hunger from starvation and extreme dieting. If we can do this, only then we will start enjoying the sweet hunger that has Therapeutic benefits for both physical and mental health.
We have discussed mindful eating and its positive effects on our health. Mindfulness in itself might not be all good, as an example we can mindfully over eat, or mindfully choose intoxicating foods, or extremely high calorie foods etc. It is thus important make our choices carefully, so we understand minimum and maximum levels of our own body.
Add lots of variety in the food to make it interesting and nutritious. If we have lots of variety in the food, perhaps it will also take care of different needs of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins and minerals – in addition to flavours, smell and good looks.
One of the participants in this workshop shared following comments in regards to respecting the food… I quote.
In Japanese culture it’s customary to begin every meal by appreciating the appearance and smell of the food (and the effort of the cook) and then saying “Itadakimasu” before eating, which means something like “I humbly receive this”; then when they’re finished, they say ” Gochisousama desita” which means “[thank you] for the feast.” Even if you don’t speak Japanese, you can think these thoughts — and you should always thank the cook, even if it’s you! ……… Sunshine
This is a wonderful practice and there are similar practices in other cultures as well. Saying Grace, bon appetit, in the sense of “(have a) good meal,” from French. Same goes for most of the western European languages, for example: Italian: Buon appetito!
German: Guten Appetit! / Mahlzeit (“mealtime”) / Switzerland: En Guete! / Ä Guetä!
